Public Forums Scheduled on Penalties Structure

Oregon’s Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA) announces a series of public forums to seek input on the agency’s penalty structure.

On both the national and state levels, there have been suggestions in recent years that OSHA penalties are not being used as effectively as they might to promote health and safety in the workplace. The purpose of the forums will be to discuss potential changes that could be made to Oregon OSHA penalties in order to respond to these suggestions. The following forum is currently scheduled in Medford:

Monday, July 12, 2010; 6 p.m.

Carnegie Library Building – Large conference room/ 205 S. Central Ave., Medford

2011 Oregon GOSH Conference coming to Portland

Conference themed “Safety: It’s a Marathon, Not a Sprint.”

Mark your calendar for the Oregon Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health (GOSH) Conference, to be held March 7-10, 2011, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The largest conference of its kind in the Northwest, will feature more than 140 workshops and sessions. Conference specialties such as health care, ergonomics, construction, emergency preparedness and response, industrial hygiene, and workplace wellness are some of the other session tracks.

Registration for the event is expected to open in winter of 2010, with exhibit space assignments beginning in September 2010. New to this conference will be a skills demonstration in the Columbia Forklift Challenge. The first-ever forklift skills and safety demonstration will be held in conjunction with the Oregon Governor’s Occupational Safety & Health (GOSH) Conference coming in March 2011 to Portland. This inaugural event, dubbed the “Columbia Forklift Challenge,” will showcase some of the top (and safest) operators this area has ever seen!

In order to plan and prepare for a successful competition, we would like you to answer a few questions in the survey linked below. Your input will help us produce a great event.

GOSH CONFERENCE 2011

SAFETY EXCELLENCE AWARDS

It’s not too early to be thinking about exceptional employers, safety committees and individuals from southern Oregon who are worthy of recognition at the biennial Governor’s Occupational Safety and Health (GOSH) Conference in March 2011. GOSH awards honor exemplary safety performance in several categories: Organizations – outstanding employer safety program (by employer size), association, and safety committee (by employer size); Individuals – outstanding individual safety and health advocate, labor representative, and safety and health professional (industry specific).

It’s a thrilling experience to be recognized by hundreds of your professional peers at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland – the awards ceremony will be held during lunch on Wednesday, March 9, 2011. We’d love to see southern Oregon well-represented – we know there are extraordinary safety programs and professionals in our midst.

Applications must be received by October 28, 2010. For more information and application forms, visit www.oregongosh.com/awards.
